aka RéY is a rapper, composer & producer from South East London, with an original blend of styles that draw comparisons with the jazz infused, lyrical, soul-centric strand of hip-hop (think ATCQ, early Kanye West, Lauryn Hill & Wretch 32). Firmly rooted in hip-hop, his music starts with a beatbox & then employs an eclectic range of instruments including the djembe, horns, strings & harps lending his idiosyncratic sound a “big band” aesthetic.
In October 2017, aka RéY put out his first single ‘Untitled’, accompanied by a music video featuring the real Jon Snow of Channel 4, screened for the first time at Regent St Cinema. April last year aka RéY celebrated the release of his debut EP ‘LOG 03’ with a launch event & live show at Picturehouse Central, London. Encompassing a breadth of sounds & themes, the EP has everything from socio-economics, ethnicity & class to relationships & the 9-5 big city grind. Later on that year in the summer, aka RéY wrote ‘We Run Together’ a track for The London Relay – a fundraising, Guinness world-record, non stop running relay attempt, aimed at helping to change young lives through sport. The track was aired for the first time exclusively on BBC Radio London the night before the launch of the relay.
Ahead of releasing his latest single ‘Worldwide 2.0’, aka RéY showcased his work at the Prince of Peckham with faces in the industry attending to get an early listen. This track marks the start of an exciting year ahead with another project slated for release mid-2019.
